Which types of building projects require a building permit?
Under the Ontario Building Code Act, a building permit is required for the construction of an addition or alteration of any structure which results in a building area of over 10m2 (108) sq. ft. A list of typical projects that do require a permit, includes:
| Installation of Siding | Dormers of finishing of attic space | Replacement of brick veneer |
| Decks | One or two story additions | Replacement of masonry chimney below roof line |
| Balconies | Finishing a basement | Installation of irrigation systems |
| Outdoor Boilers | Plumbing and/or drains (except replacing fixtures) | Installation, repair of storm, sanitary & water service |
| New Foundations | New or structural alterations to windows & doors | Installation of clean out |
| New fireplaces | Interior structural alterations | Conversion from septic to sewer |
| Completion of roughed-in fireplaces | Adding or removing most walls (i.e. creating different room sizes and/or uses) | Insulation of exterior wall, when exterior or interior cladding is removed |
| New porches & enclosing a porch | Basement or main floor walkout alterations | Demolition of any structure |
