Alexandria, February 5, 2020 – On behalf of Council and the residents of North Glengarry, I am proud to welcome the participants and coaches of the Eastern Regional Broomball Championships, that will be held in Alexandria the weekend of February 21 to 23.

Broomball is a truly Canadian sport, which traces its roots back to the early 1900s when rail workers would stay active during the winter months by playing the sport on icy surfaces and ponds. The exact origins of broomball are difficult to trace but are believed to have been passed on by First Nations peoples who introduced the sport to settlers.

I think we can all agree that the hardy nature of Canadians is renowned. When temperatures plummet, we do not flee. We look to sports that challenge the weather and our own endurance. In our commitment to sport, we become stronger and healthier. We form bonds with friends and neighbours and we manage to stay healthy and active throughout the winter.

At the Eastern Regional Broomball Championships we will cheer for the elite athletes who have shown true commitment to their sport. We are happy to greet you at the Glengarry Sports Palace and we hope that our residents will join in cheering for their favoured teams.

We welcome you to North Glengarry, céad míle fáilte (a hundred thousand welcomes).

North Glengarry Mayor, Jamie MacDonald
