ALEXANDRIA, January 14, 2019 – Starting in January, the Township of North Glengarry will be changing the structure of its Committees of Council. To increase efficiency and facilitate debate, Council will be adopting a new “Committee of the Whole” structure.

“Switching to a Committee of the Whole will help us to better facilitate the decision-making process of Council. It will cut down on the number of committee meetings that staff and council attend each month, saving in time and expense.   All of Council will have the opportunity to fully participate in debate and to forward recommendations to our regularly scheduled Council meetings for final decision,” said North Glengarry Mayor Jamie MacDonald, who will act as the Chair of this public meeting.

The Committee of the Whole represents an important forum for public debate and public input on issues within Council’s area of responsibility. The Public will have the opportunity to provide comments and feedback on the reports presented at the Committee of the Whole.  Delegations will continue to be offerd at Council and will also be offered at the Committee of the Whole meetings as well.

The new Committee of the Whole will replace four other committees, which were formerly defined as the District Fire Chiefs Committee, , the Planning and By-Law Enforcement Committee, the Public Works Advisory Committee, and the Recreation Advisory Committee

The Committee of the Whole will meet at the Sandfield Centre, at 3 p.m., on the third Wednesday of each month. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend meetings. The agendas and minutes relating to this, and other committees, will remain available online at www.northglengarry.ca

The Glengarry Sports Palace Board meetings will continue to be held outside of the Committee of the Whole. This entity is jointly managed by the Township of North Glengarry and the Township of South Glengarry.

The Community Improvement Plan Advisory Committee is being dissolved and its functions will be absorbed into the Art, Culture and Heritage Advisory Committee, which will continue to administer the North Glengarry Community Improvement Plan. The Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee reports to Council on issues relating to arts, culture and heritage promotion within the Township of North Glengarry and specific interests such as the Community Grants Program and the Community Improvement Plan.

The Community Development Committee is a new committee being launched by Council. The Community Development Committee will address subjects such as potential school closures or boundary changes, agricultural concerns, economic development opportunities, and priorities that will be identified through the Municipality’s Strategic Plan.

The Township is seeking applications from volunteers interested in sitting on both the committees.  To be eligible to sit on either the Arts, Culture and Heritage Advisory Committee or the Community Development Committee, applicants must be 18 years of age or older, and a resident of North Glengarry, or an eligible elector in North Glengarry.  Individuals are asked to forward a cover letter containing the following information:

  • The name of the Committee that you are applying for
  • Your interest in serving on the Committee
  • Any pertinent experience that you bring to the Committee
  • A summary of your qualifications

Meetings will take place in late afternoon, or early evening and will be held once each month. The deadline to apply to join these committees is 12 pm on January 30, 2019. Applications should be emailed to cao@northglengarry.ca
