Alexandria, Ontario, July 20, 2020 – There is always lots to see and do at Alexandria Island Park, located at 102 Derby Street West, in Alexandria. The municipal park is located at the heart of the village and features one of the only public beaches within the region.

Last week Island Park was gifted with two new assets, courtesy of local wood worker Ben Pye of Pye Property and Energy Management Ltd., of South Glengarry.  Mr. Pye generously donated a new park bench that is adorned with a Scottish thistle and a mini picnic table that is customized for two people to play checkers or chess. Chess pieces are not being provided at this time, due to COVID-19 precautions, but patrons are welcome to bring their own.

With hot weather in the forecast, the park is expected to be busy this week, with visitors escaping to the shade dappled shoreline, which is home to an assortment of mature trees, interspersed with regular trips to the splash pad to cool off. The boat launch offers easy access for kayakers and canoeists to access the pond and it is a great spot to cast a line and enjoy a day of fishing.

The beach is currently closed for swimming, due to a high bacteria count. This situation typically happens where there is a dry spell, followed by heavy rain. The pond water is regularly tested by representatives from the Eastern Ontario Health Unit and the results are posted on a board located near the beach. This doesn’t stop beach goers from enjoying a day in the sand, with regular breaks to cool off in the nearby splash pad. We ask that you please refrain from feeding the geese and other animals that call the park their home.

The tennis court and skateboard park are now open.

We ask that all visitors respect social distancing recommendations when visiting the park and that they make sure to leave at least 2-metres of space between them and others. This includes the use of the splash pad, play structures and other features.

As part of the Stage 3 reopening procedures that went into effect last Friday, the play structures are now accessible to visitors, but they are not being disinfected in between uses. Visitors are asked to bring their own hand sanitizer and to use all equipment responsibly and as safely as possible.

Alexandria Island Park is located at 102 Derby Street West, in Alexandria and it is open daily from 5 am to 11 pm.
