Heritage Properties

The Ontario Heritage Act requires us to keep a register of property that is of cultural heritage value or interest. The register is commonly known as the Municipal Heritage Register (MHR) and includes:

  • Property that has been designated under Part IV (individual) or Part V (heritage conservation districts) of the Ontario Heritage Act; and,
  • Property that has been listed as a non-designated property of cultural heritage value or interest.

Individually Designated Heritage Properties

At present time, there are four Designated Heritage Properties in the Township of North Glengarry:

  • Priest's Mill
  • Pioneer Museum
  • Kenyon Township Hall
  • Maxville Grandstand

A property can only be designated under Part IV (individual) of the Ontario Heritage Act and therefore placed on the Municipal Heritage Register following consultation with both the Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee which acts at the Township's Municipal Heritage Committee and the property owner. The individually designated property is subject to a designating By-law that identifies the reasons for designation and a list of heritage attributes.

Listing of Non-designated Property of Cultural Heritage Value or Interest

A non-designated property of cultural heritage value or interest is listed on the Municipal Heritage Register following a thorough and objective four-step process, which includes:

  • Identification of properties of cultural heritage significance. Submissions from the public are welcome.
  • Recording of the building through photos and a survey of the architectural characteristics .
  • Historical Research on past ownership, architect and signif-icance to the development of North Glengarry through the use of archives, the land registry and other resources.
  • Presentation to Council of a statement of significance of each property for approval by formal resolution.
  • Publication of the listed build-ing on the North Glengarry Heritage Register.
