Council adopts 2026 budget

At the January 12, 2026 Council meeting, Council reviewed staff report TR-2026-01: 2026 Budget Adoption.

The Senior Management Team, along with departmental staff, began gathering information for the 2026 operating and capital budget in the early fall of 2025. Actual expenditures were compared to the budgeted expenditures and the 2026 budget was prepared based on projections and the information available at the time. On January 8th, Council held a Special Meeting to discuss the 2026 operating and capital budgets. The following changes were proposed and agreed upon:

• A transfer from reserves to finance the $130,000 commitment towards the Maxville Slab Project.
• A decrease to the proposed garbage fee of $200 to $180.

Other items discussed at the Budget Meeting included: 

• Creation of a reserve policy and reserve update
• Further information on animal control
• A review of the clear cutting fees
• An update on the Maxville Main Street sign
• The Maxville Sports Complex slab replacement and funding options, including grants and reserves
• The dumping station in Alexandria
• The possibility of local sponsorships for benches and picnic tables
• An update on the Alexandria community garden
• The possibility of a partnership with Glengarry District High School for the tennis courts
• The elevator at the Glengarry Sports Palace and other possible financing options

Council voted in favour to approve the 2026 Operating and Capital Budget. This budget will result in a net tax levy of $7,536,593, a tax levy increase of 5.46%. The calculation of the tax rate, including the county and education rates, is underway and will be brought to Council for approval at a later date.
