Municipal Election

Elections for municipal government are held every four years on the fourth Monday of October. The length of term for all municipal elected officials is four years. The current term started in 2022 and ends in 2026.

The next municipal election will be held Monday, October 26, 2026.

Details about voting methods, voting locations, advance voting opportunities, and candidate information will be shared as they become available. Please check back regularly for updates as we approach Election Day. 

Voter Information

 Eligible voters for municipal elections must meet the the following criteria: 

  • A Canadian citizen and at least 18 years old
  • A resident in North Glengarry (including property renters)
  • A property owner in North Glengarry
  • A spouse of an owner or tenant in North Glengarry

Elections Ontario is responsible for maintaining the Permanent Register of Electors for Ontario, commonly known as the Voters' List. To vote in an upcoming Municipal Election, you must be on the Voters' List. You can confirm, update or add your information through Election Ontario. Your name must be on the Voters' List to cast a ballot on election day.

On voting day, electors must bring a piece of identification to the voting station to receive a ballot. the identification must show your name and address, photo ID is not required.

Voting will take place in a designated location in North Glengarry. Advanced voting dates will begin on October 19, 2026. 

During advanced voting days, voters can attend the Township office located at 3720 County Road 34, Alexandria, if they require assistance with voting or to register to vote.

On election day, a Voter Help Centre will be set up at a location to be determined from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm.

I want to run in the municipal election

The 2026 Municipal and School Board Election will see the positions of Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Councillor and School Board Trustees open to elections. Nominations for these positions will open May 1, 2026 and end on August 21, 2026 at 2:00pm.  

Interested candidates who wish to run for Municipal Office will be required to complete all nomination forms and pay a nomination fee. To file a nomination, candidates must book an appointment with the Deputy Clerk. Please contact deputyclerk@northglengarry.ca to book your appointment. Please bring one (1) piece of government issued photo identification with you to your appointment. 

Unlike other levels of government, municipal election candidates are not elected to represent a political party. 

Eligible candidates for municipal elections must be:

  • A Canadian citizen and at least 18 years old 
  • A resident of North Glengarry, a non-resident owner or tenant of land in North Glengarry or the spouse of such non-resident owner or tenant

You cannot be a candidate if you are:

  • A person who is serving a sentence of imprisonment in a penal or correctional institute.
  • A corporation.
  • A person acting as an executor or trustee or in any other representative capacity.
  • A person who ceases to be a Canadian citizen.
  • A person who is not a resident, the owner or tenant of land or the spouse of an owner or tenant of land in the municipality.
  • An employee of the municipality or local board unless he or she takes an unpaid leave of absence beginning the day the employee is nominated and resigns if elected to the office.
  • A person who is not an employee of the municipality but who is the Clerk, Treasurer, Integrity Commissioner, Auditor General, Ombudsman or registrar referred to in section 223.11 of the Municipal Act, 2001 or an investigator referred to in subsection 239.2 91 of the municipality, or a person who is not an employee of the municipality but who holds an administrative position of the municipality.
  • A judge of any court; a member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario or the Senate or House of Commons of Canada.
  • A public servant within the meaning of the Public Service of Ontario Act, 2006.
  • A federal employee within the meaning of the Public Service Employment Act.
  • A person who is prohibited from voting in a municipal election according to the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 or the Municipal Act2001.
  • A person who has violated financial requirements for filing financial information in the previous election.
  • A person who has been convicted of a corrupt practice under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 or of an offence under the Criminal Code (Canada) in connection with an act or omission that relates to an election to which the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 applies.

Nominations open Friday, May 1, 2026 and close on Friday, August 21, 2026, at 2:00 pm.

To file a nomination, candidates will be required to complete all nomination forms and pay a nomination fee.

School Board Trustee

School Board Trustees are essential members of the school board team. They serve on the school board to represent the interests of their community and school board's constituents. Trustees are involved in tasks such as setting policies and priorities for the board, approving the board’s annual budget, and participating in board and committee meetings.

All property owners in North Glengarry can choose which school board to support. This applies even if you do not currently have children attending school. Which school board you support is indicated on your Property Assessment Notice. If you don’t select which board to support, your support will default to the English-Public school board. You can review or update your school support designation at any time using MPAC’s Online School Support Tool. If you wish to update your school support designation, you must do so by June 1, 2026. 

Eligible candidates for School Board Trustee positions must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be a Canadian citizen
  • Reside in the school board’s area of jurisdiction OR be an owner or tenant of land there (or the spouse of such person)
  • Not be legally prohibited from voting
  • Not be disqualified by any other legislation   

For Catholic boards, you must also:

    • Be Roman Catholic
    • Be listed as a separate school supporter for school board purposes
