RRCA Summer Work Offers Range of Experiences for Students and Graduates

Though summer may still feel far away, students and recent graduates can now look at securing a front-row seat in the world of community-led, watershed-based natural resource management, as the Raisin Region Conservation Authority (RRCA) is offering several seasonal employment opportunities.

“Our local conservation authority is recruiting 14 summer staff this year to help deliver our programs during the busy Conservation Area and field work season,” says Josianne Sabourin, RRCA’s Executive Assistant. “Ranging from conservation technician to marina attendant and Cooper Marsh nature interpreter, these positions are perfect for those looking to gain valuable on-the-job experience, learn specialized skills, and build their professional network.”

A not-for-profit environmental organization legislated under the Conservation Authorities Act, the RRCA is one of Ontario’s 36 conservation authorities.

“Our programs and services include protecting people and property from natural hazards like flooding and erosion, conserving environmentally significant land, protecting municipal drinking water sources, fostering landowner stewardship, and providing recreation and eco-tourism opportunities,” says Sabourin. “Our three Conservation Areas – Gray’s Creek, Charlottenburgh Park, and Cooper Marsh – provide the region with public access to nature, managed wildlife habitat, and enhanced watershed resilience.”

Last summer, Caroline Kupczyk – an engineering chemistry graduate from Queen’s University now working on her master’s in civil engineering – worked on natural feature inventories on RRCA conservation lands. “The positive environment and collaborative nature of the RRCA makes it a very enjoyable workplace,” she says. “It is fulfilling to know that the work I am doing has a direct effect on supporting the environment.”

The RRCA also offers co-op placements for local students as opportunities arise. For more information, visit rrca.on.ca or contact (613) 938-3611 or info@rrca.on.ca.
