Burn Permits

The North Glengarry Fire Department allows residents to obtain their Open-Air Burn permit online. This system allows for easy, accurate and real time information for both the residents and the fire department.

All open-air fires require a permit. 

Types of Burn Permits

 Reminders

  • No open air burning when the wind velocity is greater than 15 kilometers an hour. 
  • It is not permitted to burn noxious materials and/or household garbage, buildings or machinery.
  • Residents with a Farm and Agricultural Permit are required to contact the North Glengarry Fire Department when burning.
  • Be sure to read and abide by the regulations as described in the current Burn Bylaw.
  • All active fires must always be monitored and have a means of extinguishment ready that matches the size of the fire.

  • This permit type encompasses fires as outline in Part 2 & 3 of By-Law 16-23. 
  • Recreation fires are for the purpose of cooking, warmth or personal enjoyment;
  • Fires must have a flame of no more than 1 cubic meter; 
  • Fires must be located at least 5 meters from any structure, building, property line, tree, hedge, fence, highway, deck, overhead wire or any other combustible material; 
  • Fires must be located on a non combustible surface if an appliance is used e. have, as a fuel, clean wood or charcoal. 
  • Spark guards with openings no larger than 12 mm in diameter are recommended for all recreational fires 

 

  • This permit type encompasses fires as outline in Part 2 & 4 of By-Law 16-23. 
  • Must be at least 50 meters from the nearest dwelling and be at least 5 meters from the property line
  • Must be at least 15 meters from forest, woodland, or buildings d. consist of brush and yard waste (except grass)
  • Consist of material which have been adequately dried prior to burning to ensure low moisture content and avoid excessive smoke.
  • Fires are not to exceed 2 cubic meters and only one pile at a time.
  • Petroleum products, plastics, rubber, painted lumber, pressure treated, or creosote treated lumber, domestic, industrial & agricultural waste, animal carcasses or any other materials that will cause excessive smoke or noxious fumes must not be mixed with or contaminate the wood or brush that may be burned.
  • Permit holders/supervisors must have the resources to adequately control the fire and to prevent it from becoming dangerous to life or property. 

  • This permit type encompasses fires as outline in Part 2 & 5 of By-Law 16-23. $50 fee applies. 
  • Each permit is valid for two (2) consecutive weeks. 
  • The supervisor in charge shall call the phone number on the permit to initiate the burn period. 
  • Supervisor in charge shall be equipped with sufficient personnel and mechanical equipment to control and/or extinguish the fire. This equipment must be on site while burning is carried out.
  • All fires must:
    • Be no less than 75 meters from any building, structure, standing timber, hedge, fence, highway, overhead wires, flammable or combustible material;
    • Be no less than 200 meters from any dwelling not owned by the Supervisor.
    • Material to be burned must be placed in piles in a tilled or bare field free of vegetation and combustible materials;
    • Consist of burn piles of no more than 6 cubic meters;
    • No more than four (4) piles can be burned at a single time;
    • a minimum distance of 15m must be maintained between piles;
    • Windrow are not permitted.
    • Material to be burned shall have been adequately dried prior to burning to ensure low moisture content and avoid excessive smoke.
    • Petroleum products, plastics, rubber, painted lumber, pressure treated, or creosote treated lumber, domestic, industrial & agricultural waste, animal carcasses or any other materials that will cause excessive smoke or noxious fumes must not be mixed with or contaminate the wood or brush that may be burned  

Please note: Farm/Agriculture Burn Permits are not issued between July 1 - August 31

Setting up Your Online Burn Permit Account

The North Glengarry Fire Department is pleased to announce our new Open-Air Burn permit application procedure.  The new procedure is on-line registration process, which will provide easy, accurate and real time information for both the residents and the fire department. All open-air fires require a permit. 

  • Visit https://northglengarry.burnpermits.com  or the link posted on the Township of North Glengarry Website.
  • Follow the steps to create an account. Please keep this information for future reference.
  • An important feature is selecting how you would like to be contacted regarding burn bans and other important notifications. You may select email, text or phone.
  • Your Profile will require a civic address. When registering for Permits on additional properties that do not necessarily have assigned Civic Addresses, such as farms or field entrances, state your road name and lot number in the address line (i.e. Conc Rd 2 Lot 2). then the Postal Code it its field. The system will then ask you to click and drag a marker pin to the exact location of the burn or field entrance.

Residents

  • Portal for important education and prevention information in regarding to North Glengarry open burning.
  • The automated system will alert residents throughout the year to important notifications such as burn bans or changes to fire risk levels.
  • Annual permits will have a simple annual renewal process. A resident only needs to set up an online profile once.
  • If a resident is unable to use the online process for initial registration, they may attend in-person to the town office located at 3720 County Road 34, Alexandria, where a paper application can be generated, and will be processed through the new on-line system.

Fire Service     

  • Real time tracking of all active open-air burn permits.
  • Improved safety for our responders if an Open Burn is reported. We may downgrade our response if it is suspected that it is a permitted burn.
