North Glengarry and SDG Advocate for Senior Government Support for Alexandria Main Street and Mill Square Revitalization Project at AMO

The Township of North Glengarry and the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SD&G) joined together last week at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) Conference for a delegation with Amarjot Sandhu, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Infrastructure, to advocate for funding from senior levels of government in support of the Alexandria Main Street and Mill Square Revitalization Project.

The delegation was supported by Glengarry-Prescott-Russell MPP Stéphane Sarrazin, who joined municipal representatives in advocating for funding from senior levels of government to advance this important infrastructure project.

The Alexandria Main Street and Mill Square Revitalization Project is a partnership between the Township of North Glengarry and the United Counties of SD&G aimed at addressing critical infrastructure needs within Alexandria's downtown core. The project includes the replacement of aging water, sanitary sewer and stormwater infrastructure, rehabilitation of Main Street (County Road 34), accessibility improvements, streetscape enhancements, and public realm improvements.

"The Alexandria Main Street and Mill Square Revitalization Project represents a significant investment in the future of our community," said Mayor Jamie MacDonald. "By working together with our partners at the United Counties of SD&G, we are advancing a project that will renew critical infrastructure, support housing growth, strengthen our downtown core, and create new opportunities for residents, businesses, and visitors alike."

The project will help address aging infrastructure challenges while supporting future residential growth, economic development, and downtown revitalization. Municipal representatives emphasized that continued investment from senior levels of government will be essential to moving the project toward construction.

County Road 34, which serves as Alexandria's Main Street, is a vital regional transportation corridor connecting Highway 401 and Highway 417 and accommodating more than 10,000 vehicles per day. The coordinated approach being undertaken by North Glengarry and SD&G will maximize efficiencies, reduce disruption, and ensure infrastructure investments deliver long-term benefits for the community and the region.

"The Township and Counties have completed significant planning work and remain committed to advancing this project," said Michael Fawthrop, Chief Administrative Officer for the Township of North Glengarry. "Our discussion focused on the need for continued provincial and federal infrastructure funding programs that help municipalities renew critical infrastructure, support housing growth, and build stronger communities."

The Township of North Glengarry and the United Counties of SD&G thank Parliamentary Assistant Sandhu for the opportunity to discuss the project and thank MPP Stéphane Sarrazin for his continued support and advocacy for infrastructure investments that benefit North Glengarry and the surrounding region.
