North Glengarry Fire Department - Hosts NFPA 1006 Vehicle Extrication Certification Course Through the Ontario Fire College

NORTH GLENGARRY, ON - The North Glengarry Fire Department hosted an NFPA 1006 Common Passenger Vehicle Auto Extrication certification course, delivered through the Ontario Fire College, to support firefighter development and emergency response capabilities across the SD&G County mutual aid system.

Participating firefighters represented the North Glengarry Fire Department and fire services from the City of Cornwall, South Glengarry, North Stormont, South Stormont, North Dundas and South Dundas.

Held September 26–27 and October 2–4, 2026, the course combined mandatory online learning with classroom instruction and extensive hands-on training at the North Glengarry Fire Department Training Facility.

Delivered through the Ontario Fire College, the course provided firefighters with the training and testing required for NFPA 1006 Common Passenger Vehicle Auto Extrication certification. Through realistic, hands-on scenarios, firefighters practiced stabilizing vehicles, using specialized rescue equipment and safely removing trapped occupants.

A key objective was to develop certified instructor firefighters who could return to their departments and share their knowledge through in-house certification training, extending the benefits of the program throughout SD&G and the City of Cornwall.

Vehicle extrication requires coordinated teamwork, sound decision-making and proficiency with specialized rescue equipment. Providing this certification opportunity locally helps participating departments strengthen these capabilities while building working relationships with neighbouring services.

The North Glengarry Fire Department thanks the Ontario Fire College, the course instructors, participating fire departments and everyone who contributed to delivering the program. Their cooperation supported a shared commitment to firefighter safety, professional development and effective emergency response.

“Bringing firefighters together for this certification course provides an opportunity to train together, share experience and strengthen their skills. Through the Ontario Fire College, we were able to provide hands-on training that participants can bring back to their departments, helping improve vehicle extrication capabilities throughout SD&G and the City of Cornwall,” said North Glengarry Fire Chief Matthew Roy.
