Public Health Advisory: Blue-Green Algae Caution

Based on water testing completed by by the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP), a blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) bloom has been confirmed in the south east area of Mill Pond. While the testing results are below the Health Canada recreational water guideline, EOHU still recommends avoiding contact with visible algae accumulations and discoloured water as a precaution. The algae bloom is being monitored by the Township in conjunction with the EOHU and MECP. 

Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms are common this time of year and are more likely to occur in calm waters, combined with high temperatures. 

Residents should contact with discoloured water, surface scum, or areas where algae are visibly accumulating. Keep children and pets away from affected areas, as they may be at greater risk of exposure. Effects of exposure may include itchy, irritated eyes and skin from direct contact with algae, or flu-like symptoms if large quantities of toxins are swallowed

Unrelated to the cyanobacteria bloom, the beach at Island Park Beach is currently posted as unsafe for swimming due to elevated bacteriological levels. Current beach status can be found on the Eastern Ontario Health Unit website.
